Supervised by: Communications and Advocacy Team Leader

Location: Primarily in Gulu, Uganda

Duration: 3-6 months

Classification: Unpaid voluntary position

The Communications Intern supports JRP in helping to communicate its work and initiatives. Primary tasks will include writing and editing traditional, web and social media communication, contributing to press releases, and organising and documenting events. The Communications Intern will also be key in coordinating Voices. Other tasks include collecting and compiling data, and writing and editing reports, statements, and briefs, as well as contributing to fundraising as well as proposal writing.

The Communications Intern will provide support across all of JRP’s work streams and will be required to travel within northern and central Uganda for field activities.

Preference will be given to candidates who are available for 6 months and are able to start immediately.

Competencies and Skills

A successful applicant must

  • Have excellent English writing skills
  • Have a high level of creativity
  • Be very attentive to detail
  • Be great at photography and videography, including having basic photo and video editing skills
  • Be very versatile and open to learning

Experience with the following are not a requirement but will be an advantage:

  • Experience with monitoring and evaluation
  • Working knowledge of northern Ugandan languages including Acholi, Ateso, Lango, Lugbara, and Madi


The intern will have demonstrable knowledge of and an interest in transitional justice and human rights in Uganda and Africa’s Great Lakes region.

Current or recently graduated (i.e. within the last year) students with a background in journalism, human rights, law or any other social sciences field are encouraged to apply.
